Abstract

By Friday morning, Donna Montgomery, a bank loan officer, had been in hiding for almost a week from her husband, Robert. On Thursday, Robert had been served with divorce papers, and Donna well knew his explosive temper and cruel tendency toward violence. Physically and emotionally abusive throughout their thirteen-year marriage, Robert had once tied Donna up, put a gun in her mouth, and threatened to kill her. Also pathologically jealous, Robert always picked out Donna’s clothing for her, would fly into a rage whenever she came home even minutes late from work, and refused to allow her to mingle with the other bank employees, even demanding that she pack her lunch every day rather than go out with them. When Donna called Robert on the telephone after leaving him, he told her that he had burned all of her clothing. He also told her that he was going to kill her and himself because marriage meant “’til death do us part.” Donna had been in hiding now for almost a week because she knew he meant it.
