Abstract
Sydney Pollack is a good, classical storyteller, an undervalued craft in contemporary American cinema. A well-made narrative has complex, full-bodied characters whose traits and actions move the story forward. In order to transform those characters into living, breathing creations, the director needs actors. And the actor—if he is to fully embody a character— must fulfill the requirements of the written role and bring striking, original, and memorable qualities to the part.
