Abstract

In 1988 Time magazine’s Man of the Year was Planet Earth. The theme of the issue was that the habitability and future of our planet had been the central focus of hundreds of important news stories written throughout the year. The cover of the December 1988 issue of National Geographic was a three-dimensional hologram of an exploding planet earth with this haunting question posed underneath: “Can Man Save This Fragile Planet?” The July 24, 1989, issue of Newsweek focused on problems of the environment and “cleaning up our mess.”
