Abstract
PV is now being used for a diverse set of applications, but only on a very small scale. The total world sales of PV is about $400M annually, or about 40 MW of PV systems. This is a drop in the bucket as far as world energy is concerned, but the present market for PV provides a valuable foundation for the future:
-
Existing markets provide companies with partial displacement of R&D costs, since they can use sales revenue to fund R&D.
-
Sale of products provide a near-term basis for investment in PV companies.
-
PV applications are a laboratory for developing new products and expertise that will be of significance for future, larger applications.
-
They stimulate public awareness of PV.
