Abstract

Sunrise makes the rose-colored stones that comprise Jerusalem glow, as it has since King David’s time. The sky is clear, the morning brisk but not cold; we leave the cool Judean hills for a very short ride to the lowest spot on earth—the Dead Sea. Here it is much drier and very hot. As we travel along the edge of this strange mineral body of water to En Gedi and Masada we become part of an ancient land. Here where the Dead Sea Scrolls were hidden for over 2000 years we feel the past is now. Forgotten is the narrow passage of land between the Mediterranean and the former malarial swamp (the Emek) now drained by modern Israelis and turned into a lush meadowland. This narrow trade route passage that was such an economic advantage to the ancient Judeans is now a terrible burden since it is dangerously located between the millstones of Mesopotamia and Egypt. All that is now forgotten as we lose ourselves in the past with the seminomadic Hebrews who changed the world.

That which is hateful unto thee, do not do unto another. This is the whole Torah; the rest is commentary. Go and study.

Hillel, 50 B.C.
