Abstract

We enter ancient Greece from the mountains, with a deep appreciation for the brilliant beauty of the land and sea. We arrive with a shepherd, who is dressed simply and leads us across the verdant hillsides with his sheep. By daylight he is at ease. When night falls he must worry, for the hills are also home to wolves and bears, and his sheep are their prey.

Whenever the number of those in the middle state has been too small, those who were the more numerous, whether the rich or the poor, always overpowered them, and assumed to themselves the administration of public affairs. . . . When either the rich get the better of the poor, or the poor of the rich, neither of them will establish a free state.

Aristotle, 334 B.C.
