Abstract

The University of California was an early leader in astronomical research. With the completion of the 60-inch reflector at Mount Wilson, then the 100-inch reflector a few years later, however, it fell behind the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). And when the 200-inch reflector at Palomar was inaugurated in 1948 it was completely overshadowed.
