Abstract

After work started on the 88-inch telescope, Jefferies turned some of his attention to expanding the Institute for Astronomy as well as trying to interest others in Mauna Kea. There was a considerable amount of room on the top of the mountain for other observatories, and with the exceptional conditions, he was convinced others would be interested. And indeed within a few years, he had attracted the attention of several countries, Canada and France among the first.
