Abstract

Despite figures that may, at any given time, show dramatic increases in church membership or attendance, America’s real religion is diversion—from the fears, threats, or presentiments about our fate, variously described as funks or as a general malaise. We’ve seen how the search for answers leads many into cultish paths; even the devout are troubled in their wanderings. If God is dead, as Nietzsche held He was, we must either find a replacement or resign ourselves to the mostly unacceptable notion that this is all there is.
