Abstract
Free agents will not grow old gracefully. The battle is about to be waged. Aging threatens the most cherished possessions of individualistic Americans—their financial, emotional, and physical independence. Free agents risk financial ruin in old age because of the extraordinary expenses of raising and educating children as well as saving for a lengthy retirement. They risk emotional isolation because of their propensity to divorce. They risk physical dependence as their odds of illness rise with age.
