Abstract
In Greek mythology, Hermes and Aphrodite had a handsome son named Hermaphroditus who, while taking a bath at Salmacis, aroused the amorous impulses of the nymph of the fountain. He rejected her overtures, but she flung herself on him, embracing him, and appealed to the gods that she might be forever united with him. The gods obliged and the result was a person that was half man and half woman.
