Abstract
When I look at my 8-year-old son, Ben, profoundly retarded, still in diapers and unable to speak, I wonder. Were we lucky that at one time he seemed so bright? Or were we cursed? Unlike parents who are told at their child’s birth that their infant son or daughter will “always have difficulties,” we lived for years having high expectations for Ben. He was a bright, responsive infant. He seemed to progress normally.
