High-Wattage Xenon and Mercury Vapor Compact Arc Lamps as Radiation Sources for Imaging Furnaces

Abstract

Compact or short-arc high-pressure lamps were invented in Europe as early as 1936 (1). Their main characteristic is that they combine the high brightness of carbon arcs with the maintenance-free and clean operation of regular discharge or incandescent lamps. They appeared first as specialized versions of the popular mercury vapor lamps for street and industrial lighting. High-pressure mercury short-arc lamps for use in optical equipment, such as projectors or searchlights, were developed in a wide range of wattages, from 75 W to 10 kW (2–10).
