Abstract
A description of the main features of the double parabolic arc image furnace built under the writer’s direction has been given elsewhere (1,2). The general layout of the furnace, shown in Fig. 7-1, is based on two 150-cm-diameter searchlights set on a common vertical axis. The original type of carbon electrode is used, 16 mm in diameter. Power is derived from a 22-kVA generator driven by an electric motor. Temperature is varied by varying the power dissipated in the arc and by defocusing the specimen.
