Abstract
We shall describe the construction and operation of a carbon arc image furnace designed specifically for the growth of crystals, primarily by the powder-fusion technique in the temperature range between 2500 and 3500° C. A radiant energy system was chosen for this application because, while a number of other methods are available for the attainment of temperatures in this range under conditions suitable for crystal growth, there is none so versatile with regard to purity and control of the crystal environment.
