Abstract

A survey is given of tetrahedrally close-packed structures which are dense packings of atoms of slightly different sizes with only tetrahedral interstices. The coordination numbers present are 12, 14, 15 and l6. The radii of the atoms depend on the chemical composition of the phase and increase with the coordination number. In the higher coordinations (14, 15, l6) the atoms are definitely non-spherical, each having in effect two different radii.
