Abstract
Society suffered the ravages of microbial damages before true society even existed. Man was struck by plagues and his crops were destroyed by agents which either remained unseen or became visible too late. Almost until modern times his defenses against this invisible enemy were virtually intuitive and it is surprising how successful our predecessors were in learning how to exist simultaneously with their microscopic neighbors.
