Abstract
More than three-fourths of the world’s mentally ill live in the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America — the so-called third world. Yet, the current systems of psychiatric diagnosis and classification have hardly taken into account the different patterns of psychiatric symptomatology present in these countries, or the special needs of these regions as regards psychiatric classification.
