Abstract
The concept of biochemical disturbances underlying psychic disorders is a very old one. It has first been formulated by Hippocrate. He was of the opinion that certain mental diseases derive from a specific interaction of various body humors. Under this impression he defined i.e. depressive disorders as melancholia.
