Vasomotor Mechanisms in Genesis of Denervation Atrophy

  • Chapter
The Denervated Muscle

Abstract

The maintenance of structural and functional integrity is ensured by nervous influences (as has been shown in preceding chapters) and by sufficient blood supply to the muscle. It is not possible to expect normal muscle function without an intact vascular supply. Functional, morphological and metabolic disturbances occur not only in trauma of blood vessels and Volkmann’s paresis, which are extreme cases, but also in Bürger’s disease, arteriosclerosis etc. But, of course, the limit below which blood flow must not drop if metabolic disturbances are not to occur, has never been determined. It is not even possible since such a value would vary between individuals (blood flow through human limbs varies by as much as 100%, as has been shown by Golenhofen and Hildebrandt in 1957) and in relation to the work performed.
