Metabolic Reactibility of the Denervated Muscle

  • Chapter
The Denervated Muscle

Abstract

Studies concerning metabolic reactions of the denervated muscle are (or should be considered as) a part of research on nervous regulation of metabolism. Denervation demonstrates the trophic control of the nervous system on skeletal muscles by elimination (Tower 1939); it leads to serious metabolic disturbances and it is thus important to assume a very close relationship between the metabolism of the nervous and muscle tissue. Valuable material should thus be obtained from results of metabolic disturbances in denervated muscle, concerning the mechanisms by which the nervous system regulates the metabolism of innervated structures (see Gutmann, 1955, 1959).
