Abstract

The mental handicap registers which formed the basis of this investigation were established for service-planning purposes. People eligible for registration were defined as those who used one or more of the specialist services for the mentally handicapped, or who were thought likely to require such services in the future, and who were the responsibility of one of the participating health districts. The merged registers of the NW Thames RHA, which includes 13 districts, provided information on 6625 individuals meeting the above inclusion criteria. Table 3.1 lists the participating health districts; the name of the register covering each district; the numbers of cases on each register; the population served; and the crude prevalence rate of people with mental handicaps.
