Biochemical and Cellular Mechanisms

  • Chapter
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract

At first sight it may seem an impossible task to cover the biochemical and cellular aspects of a variety of chronic destructive lung diseases encompassed by a term as broad as COPD. Indeed even if one assumes that the term is largely synonymous with emphysema, as suggested by Thurlbeck [1], it is clear that even this covers a variety of pathologically and anatomically distinct conditions. Whereas it is far from the scope of this chapter to argue the pros and cons of pathophysiologic similarities, it may well be that the basic processes that lead to COPD (whatever its pathologic features) have a common theme.
