Abstract
We have noted that both caring and working in organizations take their toll on the individual. Sometimes the person’s own needs become subsumed within the demands of the organization or profession. One positive way of coping with stress in organizations and in the caring professions is to become more assertive. Assertiveness is often confused with being aggressive — there are important differences. The assertive person is the one who can state clearly and calmly what she wants to say, does not back down in the face of disagreement and is prepared to repeat what she has to say, if necessary.
