Abstract

The Maltese Islands, Malta and Gozo, situated in the Mediterranean, have similar trends of long life expectancy to other countries in the Western world. According to the 1989 Demographic Review of these islands it has been projected that, by the year 2001, the percentage of the population over 60 years of age will be 26.2% of males and a massive 35.1% of females.
