Abstract

The Basildon Social Services Area of Essex County Council includes the towns of Basildon, Billericay and Wickford. As in the rest of the UK the numbers of elderly persons are increasing, from 20 253 in 1981 to 27 332 in 1991 and an estimated 30 494 in 1996. In the town of Billericay the increase over the period will be 38.1% compared with 33.6% for the area as a whole.
