Abstract

Ukraine is one of the oldest states within the former USSR. The number of persons 60 years and over reached 18.7% by 1989 and the average lifespan of the population is 70.9 years (66.1 for men and 75.2 for women) (Finansy, 1990). Among the consequences of demographic population ageing are significant changes in the social, economic and family status of elderly people, their health, needs for medicosocial service and care, shelter and housing.
