Abstract
As the contributions to this book show, effective community development work with older people can be found in many countries of the world. Even where there are substantial levels of publicly provided services this is often complemented, as in the UK, by an active and, at times, innovative independent sector. In the UK, voluntary organizations have been at the forefront of developments for older people. The variety of schemes and projects which now exist can be seen as, on the one hand, a direct response to the changing demographic picture and, on the other, as a counter to the problem orientated notion we have of old age.
