Abstract
The lifetime risk of epithelial ovarian cancer for a woman in the UK is about 1 in 80. Some families in which there are two ovarian cancers, or an ovarian cancer and another common cancer at a young age in close relatives will be expected to occur by chance. However, population-based epidemiological studies show that there is a significant excess risk of cancer at several sites in the relatives of ovarian cancer patients (Table 19.1). This familial clustering must arise from some combination of inherited and environmental effects.
