Abstract

Approximately 7% of babies each year are born prematurely, that is, prior to 37 weeks of completed gestation. About two thirds of these infants will be of an appropriate weight for their gestational age and the other third small for gestational age (SGA) (their birthweight will be less than the 10th centile of that expected for gestational age). Premature infants may be further classified according to their birthweight: low birthweight (LBW) less than 2500g: very low birthweight (VLBW) less than 1500g: extremely low birthweight (ELBW) less than 1000g and incredibly low birthweight (ILBW) less than 750g.
