Family interventions for schizophrenia

  • Chapter

Abstract

Family relationships seem to play an important part in the course of schizophrenia (Chapter 8). The concept of expressed emotion (EE) (Brown et al., 1972) has proved particularly influential, although it continues to attract controversy among scientific commentators and family advocates (Hatfield et al., 1987; Parker et al., 1988). When schizophrenia sufferers live in a setting that is critical, overprotective or overconcerned, they have a nine-month relapse rate that is more than twice the level in low EE environments (Kavanagh, 1992). Inspired by the research on EE and schizophrenic relapse, a number of treatment teams have developed family interventions (FI) to reduce relapse (e.g. Falloon et al., 1982; Anderson et al., 1986).
