Abstract
This book is about the potential management of the experience of depression. In the next chapter, I shall consider some of the suggested causes of this depression. In Part II, I shall discuss a structure which might form the basis for helping people to reduce the negative effects of depression. In this chapter, however, I shall explore the depressive experience: what it means to the person who is depressed, and what it means to the professionals who describe, define and attempt to ‘treat’ it. How similar, or different, are these two ‘views’ of depression? What can the professional helper learn from the sufferer, and what might she learn from us?
