Abstract
This chapter examines the relationship between health in the later decades of life, and the quality of life enjoyed by older people. It is difficult to assess the extent of positive health, both emotional and physical; all we can do is to look at the statistics of disease and disability in relation to age, and the ages at which people die, with the probable causes for their death. Some surveys have asked older people for their subjective assessment of their quality of life, and about their health, and these will be referred to later.
