Abstract

Zev, 73, a retired university lecturer in humanities, was depressed. He feared for the future that, with the union of the two Germanies and the fall of the Soviet Union, fascism would rear its ugly head, as in the 1930s and 1940s. Zev had spent two years hiding from the Nazis in a Dutch farmer’s cellar, without even a candle light to give him solace. Zev was also mourning the compulsory retirement from his job at 65.
