Abstract

The possibility of the microscopic coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity has had a rich and interesting history. Early work revealed that magnetic ions substituted into a superconducting host generally had a very detrimental effect on superconductivity [8.1] due to the exchange-induced spin depairing of the Cooper electrons [8.2]. Typically less than a percent magnetic ion concentration was found to be sufficient to destroy superconductivity, and at such low concentrations the spin correlations between the magnetic impurities could to a good approximation be neglected. Thus, there was no chance for a cooperative magnetic state to develop.
