Abstract
The use of graded-index fibres to reduce intermodal pulse-spreading has already been introduced in Section 1.2. The purpose of the present chapter is to give more details of propagation in multimode fibres with particular reference to optimum index-profiles and obtainable bandwidths. The presentation aims to give the minimum of mathematical detail consistent with an understanding of the basic physical principles involved.
