Abstract

We have studied the influence of real gas behaviour on the Ostwald ripening kinetics of inert gas bubbles in metals using a computer simulation approach. The time evolution of He, Ar and Xe bubble populations and particularly of their mean radii (rm) were analysed and compared with the corresponding ideal gas behaviour. For all cases, significant qualitative and quantitative differences in the coarsening under real and ideal gas conditions were found. These differences increase with increasing atomic number of the gas and occurs in a bubble size range of rm ⇐70 nm. The results are generalized in an attempt to provide an universal description of the Ostwald ripening kinetics of gas bubbles for real gas behaviour.
