Abstract
This presentation will focus on clinical psychological contributions to the understanding and management of coronary heart disease and high blood pressure (hypertension). Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in western society. Statistics from the World Health Organisation (1987) indicate that in 1986, cardiovascular diseases were responsible for 46% of male and 53% of female deaths in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG); the corresponding rates in England and Wales were 48% and 49% for men and women. By way of contrast, cancer accounted for just over 24% of male and 22% of female deaths in the FRG over the same period.
