Abstract
The process of formation of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and other peripheral blood cells (PBC) from their respective progenitors has been extensively studied over the last few years. In in vitro culture systems using semi-solid media it has been shown that a hierarchy of growth factors including interleukin-3 (IL-3), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), erythropoietin (EPO) modulate proliferation of hematopoietic progenitors and differentiation into functionally competent and stage cells of their respective lineage (1) (Fig. 1).
