Abstract
There is considerable variety in vertebrate osmoregulatory mechanisms and in their mode of endocrine control. Clearly, such variation between major groups of animals reflects specialization and adaptation to particular environmental niches. However, it is possible to look beyond these features and discern some progressive steps in the evolutionary development of vertebrate osmoregulatory physiology. This is the task we set ourselves in this chapter.
