An Integrated Gas Chromatographic-Mass Spectrometric Screening Method for Anabolic Steroid Urinary Metabolites in Man

  • Chapter

Abstract

For at least 3000 years, it has been a common practice to use various substances in attempts to increase physical prowess1. Since the mid-1970’s, an upsurge in the use of anabolic steroids has occured, due in part to a world-wide growth in sports interest and participation, and also because of social and financial implications of athletic achievements. The continued climb of records and anecdotal evidence on the beneficial effects of anabolic steroids have pushed their use to epidemic proportions2. For ethical reasons and due to their toxic and hormone-like side effects, the use of anabolic steroids in sports has been prohibited by the International Olympic Committee3 and all International Sports Governing Bodies.
