Abstract
The purpose of the sections which follow this technology overview are to familiarize the reader with the components and subsystems which make up fiber systems, to the extent necessary to understand the capabilities and limitations of these system building blocks. Before doing that, it is helpful to present a brief overview of fiber optics technology, in order that the somewhat more detailed discussions below can be put into context.
