Abstract
Hearing loss is a very common problem throughout the world and in developed countries the prevalence of hearing loss increases with age, with 80% being sensorineural in nature. This form of hearing loss is very rarely, if ever, reversible and the only way to reduce the number of hearing-impaired individuals in the future is by preventive measures. In less-developed countries, the majority of those with hearing loss have middle-ear disease. This may be theoretically correctable but again, prevention would have a far greater effect on the numbers of those affected. Preventive audiology will be most effective if aimed at disorders that are common and potentially avoidable, so the emphasis of this chapter will be in this area.
