Abstract
Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world in terms of area, and in 1991 had a population of 146,154,502 inhabitants, 42.5 per cent of whom were concentrated in the southeast of the country, which is also the most heavily industrialized region. It is nonetheless the country with the greatest biodiversity on the planet. It has 26 states — some with an area larger than most European countries — divided into five regions, with varying climates, ecosystems, cultures and socio-economic features.
