Epidemiology of Tuberculosis

  • Chapter
AIDS and Respiratory Medicine

Abstract

Tuberculosis competes with the measles virus and Streptococcus pneumoniae for the dubious distinction of causing the highest number of deaths each year from a single infectious agent. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently estimated that nearly 90 million new cases and 30 million deaths may occur in the decade 1990–1999 (Dolin, Raviglione and Kochi, 1994). Tuberculosis kills more adults each year than any other communicable disease (WHO, 1992). Tuberculosis alone accounted for 3.4% of all disability adjusted life years (DALYs) lost globally in 1990, and as much as 4.7% of all the DALYs lost in Sub-Saharan Africa (World Bank, 1993).
