Abstract

In patients with the acquired immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) the lung is one of the major organs to be involved, both in developed and developing countries (Murray and Mills, 1990; Rubin et al., 1991; Coulomb et al.,1992; Castro, 1995; Perriens et al., 1995). In the USA and Europe, the usefulness of radiological imaging by chest X-rays and computerized axial tomography (CT) of the chest has been shown to be invaluable in the diagnosis and management of AIDS patients (Coulomb et al., 1992; Chapter 3). While radiological investigations of the lungs in resource-poor tropical countries are restricted to chest X-rays, they provide useful information in the detection of pulmonary disease and in the assessment of response to specific treatment.
