Abstract

As the AIDS epidemic developed in North America, it became clear to respiratory physicians that as well as seeing highly unusual opportunistic lung infections there was an important interaction between bacterial pneumonia and underlying HIV immunosuppression. The association was first described in male homosexuals with AIDS and whilst most patients responded well to antimicrobial therapy several then went on to develop recurrent pneumonia (Simberkoff et al., 1984; Polsky et al.,1986; White et al., 1985).
