Abstract

Diseases caused by atypical mycobacteria were once obscure and of occasional interest to the clinician. Better laboratory techniques and heightened awareness of their clinical importance, focused by the HIV epidemic, have highlighted their potential as serious pathogens. No longer are they unclassified, anonymous or simply environmental. They are still grouped together, separately from M. tuberculosis. For this reason they will be referred to generically as ‘nontuberculous’ rather than ‘atypical’ as M. tuberculosis can present ‘atypically’ in the immunosuppressed. This chapter will concern itself with the diseases caused by these fascinating organisms, as well as their isolation and treatment. It will discuss in some detail individual mycobacteria that have caused disease in HIV-positive patients. The discussion is of course dominated by M. avium.
