Abstract

Ever since its discovery in the early nineteenth century, the possible medicinal properties of lithium have been considered by many. It was first used in the treatment of urinary bladder calculi without any effect. Similar disappointment was experienced in patients with gout (Garrod, 1873). Neither the local application of lithium solution nor the administration of oral salts was effective in dissolving uric acid crystals. In the late nineteenth century, lithium was also considered in the treatment of various neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression and epilepsy, but no obvious benefit was found.
