Abstract
When the first edition of this book appeared thirty years ago (Mather, 1949a), few experiments were available whose design and scope were such as to allow full analysis and confident interpretation. Since that time many adequate experiments have been carried out, ranging widely in both the material they drew on and statistical designs they utilized. As their results have come available we have learned more about both the genetical situations with which we are faced in understanding continuous variation and the experimental layouts that are needed for their exploration.
